New York City, US
Role
Collab with Zaijing Cheng
Located on Roosevelt Island and directly facing the United Nations Headquarters, the Monument for Refugees uses bold, geometric form to assert its monumental presence and symbolic weight. The strategic siting evokes the physical and emotional isolation often experienced by refugees—visibly present, yet politically and socially distanced.
A spiraling circulation path wraps around a central atrium, gradually descending toward a sunken reflection pool at its heart. This spatial choreography invites visitors into a space of quiet mourning and contemplation. At the same time, the monument stands as a solemn indictment—a critique of the United States' ambivalent role in global refugee crises. It is both sanctuary and statement, offering space for grieving while demanding accountability.
